Norway essentials for visitors
Allemannsretten — the right to roam
- ▸You may hike and camp freely on uncultivated land.
- ▸Pitch your tent at least 150 m from houses and cabins.
- ▸Stay max 2 nights in one spot unless far from settlements.
- ▸Leave No Trace: take all rubbish home, close gates, respect livestock.
The DNT cabin system
- ▸DNT (Norwegian Trekking Association) runs 550+ cabins across the country.
- ▸Staffed cabins serve meals; self-service cabins have stocked food you pay for; no-service cabins have only beds and a stove.
- ▸Self-service and no-service cabins use the standard DNT key — rent one with a deposit from DNT.
- ▸Pay by card or Vipps via the cabin's payment form. Members get lower prices.
Fire & weather safety
- ▸General bonfire ban in or near forests from 15 April to 15 September.
- ▸Weather can change in minutes — check yr.no and varsom.no before you go.
- ▸Follow the Mountain Code (Fjellvettreglene): plan, tell someone your route, turn back in time.
- ▸Emergency: 112 (police/rescue), 113 (medical).
